“We want to totally replace the current process with VitalQC… We’re going to stop sending blood products through [for validation].”

Challenge

Hemolysis from sample transport can cause clinically significant interference with many laboratory tests. Hemolysis also has the potential to compromise safety of red blood cell components used for transfusion.

As a CAP-, ISO 15189-, and CLIA-certified diagnostic lab, ARUP was looking for a quality control solution to confirm their Pneumatic Tube System (PTS) was safe to transport blood samples and products on an ongoing basis.

Solution

Drs. Lauren Pearson and Ryan Metcalf wanted to confirm that VitalQC could replace blood to validate and monitor their PTS for the potential for impact on blood sample and product integrity.

In order to replace their blood-based validation with VitalQC, they collected fresh blood samples from 40 donors, which were tested for hemolysis markers (LDH and free hemoglobin) before and after PTS transport. During PTS transits, VitalQC recorded total vibration.

Results

The results confirmed that changes in free hemoglobin (up to 600%) correlated with increased vibration in transport, measured with VitalQC (R2 = 0.55, p = 0.04).

Because of the relationship between measured vibration and hemolysis markers, this cross-sectional study supported ARUP Labs in their goal of replacing their standard blood-based QC approach for the PTS with VitalQC.

“If we get a VitalMetric that exceeds our defined thresholds, then we will enter an investigation where we could phlebotomize a donor and perform additional testing.” - Dr. Lauren Pearson
